Property, plant, and equipment rollforward

Working definition

A period reconciliation that explains changes in gross property, plant, and equipment, accumulated depreciation or impairment, and resulting net carrying amount by controlled movement category.

Also calledPP&E rollforward · Fixed-asset rollforward

A property, plant, and equipment rollforward is a controlled working-paper reconciliation. A net change alone hides additions, disposals, depreciation, impairment, transfers, and other events. Keep gross PP&E and accumulated amounts in separate schedules so each movement retains its account role.

beginning gross + additions − gross disposals ± other = ending gross
beginning accumulated + depreciation + impairment − amounts removed ± other
= ending accumulated
ending gross − ending accumulated = ending net PP&E

Cash capital expenditure need not equal gross additions. Unpaid acquisitions, shares issued, contributed assets, retirement costs, business combinations, and other noncash movements can intervene. Build the schedule from the fixed-asset register, general ledger, invoices, disposal records, and noncash support. Tie both ending balances to the trial balance before bridging additions to cash.

The Codification supplies inputs and disclosure requirements, but Topic 360 does not impose one universal PP&E rollforward format for every entity. ASC 360-10-50-1 addresses depreciation disclosures, including expense and balances for major classes. ASC 235-10-50-1 requires disclosure of significant accounting policies. Apply specialized industry, transaction, and regulator requirements separately.

Analysts can connect the rollforward to asset turnover, capital intensity, and replacement questions. A ratio movement does not prove underinvestment, capacity, asset age, or earnings quality. Do not hide an unexplained difference in an “other” row or treat a tied schedule as approval of its source judgments.

Use the asset-close lesson to build the linked schedules. Then complete the +numerical rollforward task and verify the gross, accumulated, net, cash, and noncash bridges.
