Concept · C:reclassification-adjustment

Reclassification adjustment

Working definition

A presentation adjustment that identifies an amount included in current net income that had been included in other comprehensive income in the current or a prior period, preventing double counting in comprehensive income.

Also calledOCI reclassification adjustment · Recycling adjustment

Without a reclassification adjustment, an amount recognized in net income after having appeared in OCI could be counted twice in total comprehensive income across the presentation. The adjustment makes the route visible.

It does not mean that every OCI component is eventually recycled or that a reclassification changes cash. The underlying Topic determines whether, when, and how a component moves. Topic 220 governs how the effect is presented.

Use one sign convention

A schedule should state whether additions to OCI and AOCI are positive and how an amount entering net income is shown. Reconcile the gross amount, tax effect, net-of-tax amount, current net-income line, OCI adjustment, AOCI movement, and comprehensive-income total. A correct ending AOCI balance does not prove the income-statement location or tax presentation is correct.

ASC 220-10-45-15 requires reclassification adjustments to prevent double counting when an item in current net income also appeared in OCI in the current or an earlier period. Do not invent a reclassification merely to make a rollforward tie. Confirm that the underlying Topic requires the transfer and retain the affected net-income line.
