Worked-example setupScope and assumptions
- The exercise describes a generic current institutional channel and uses October 1979 only as separately labeled history.
- No current policy setting or investment recommendation is supplied.
- Period
- Current mechanism description with a separate 1979 historical comparison
- Units
- qualitative evidence checkpoints
- Rounding

A memo draws one arrow: “the central bank raises its policy rate, so inflation falls.” Replace it with checkpoints.
- Identify the current authority, decision, information set, instrument, and implementation date.
- Observe how short rates, broader yields, credit terms, asset prices, exchange rates, and expectations respond.
- Trace exposure through household and business contracts, balance sheets, spending, production, and hiring.
- Measure prices and employment with the correct releases and lags.
- Compare the observed path with a defensible counterfactual and competing supply, fiscal, financial, and global shocks.
The Federal Reserve explainer supports the mechanism. The October 1979 history supports a dated sequence. Neither alone estimates the causal magnitude.
An entity may face repricing debt, different discount rates, credit losses, or changed demand. Those effects still require its contracts, cash-flow scenarios, measurement date, probability weights, and accounting authority. The macro arrow never posts the entry.
