Mistaken idea “A long-term debt label keeps all debt noncurrent”

Mistaken reasoning: A loan's original term does not keep every remaining payment noncurrent.

Updated Sep 27, 2026 Review due Nov 8, 2026

Correction

A loan's original term does not keep every remaining payment noncurrent. For an ordinary borrowing without special classification conditions, separate the principal due within the coming year from the principal due later. ASC 210-10-45-9(b) includes current maturities in current liabilities.

Explain the payment requirement

The current portion identifies a near-term repayment obligation. Dividing the presentation between current and noncurrent liabilities does not change the total amount owed.

Start with the repayment schedule. Then consider any additional conditions that could change the classification. Refinancing, covenant violations, and waivers require the separate debt guidance; the account caption cannot settle those questions.
