Mistaken idea “A numeric code is automatically a quantitative measurement”

Mistaken reasoning: This mistake averages identifiers or category codes because the stored values contain digits.

Updated Aug 21, 2026 Review due Nov 7, 2026

Why this is mistaken

Storage is not measurement. A nominal category remains nominal when coded as a number, and an ordinal label does not gain equal spacing from consecutive codes. Select summaries from the variable definition and scale.

Where to watch

When this mistake may appear

  • Categories are stored as 1, 2, and 3.
