Mistaken idea “A label or FIFO result proves which unit moved”

Mistaken reasoning: This mistake treats a product label as a supported specific unit cost trace or treats FIFO cost assignment as evidence of physical movement.

Updated Sep 10, 2026 Review due Nov 10, 2026

Why this is mistaken

A barcode can identify a product class without tracing one unit's actual cost. Specific identification needs a stable unit identifier linked to acquisition, cost, sale or removal, and ending status. FIFO answers a different question: it orders costs assigned to expense. Neither method proves physical movement.

Where to watch

When this mistake may appear

  • The item has a barcode, so specific identification applies.
  • FIFO means the oldest physical unit shipped first.
  • A balanced layer schedule proves the source records.

Your work may contain this mistake if:

  • Uses a shared product code as an actual unit trace, infers physical shipment order from FIFO, or treats a balanced schedule as proof of source facts.
