Mistaken idea “A transfer retroactively relabels investment history”

Mistaken reasoning: This mistake applies the new category to prior period activity.

Updated Sep 11, 2026 Review due Nov 8, 2026

Why this is mistaken

A classification transfer changes the accounting lane at a controlled transfer date. It does not rename the security's earlier classification or rebuild prior-period entries as if the new category had always applied.

A diagnostic gives a bond transferred from trading to AFS. A learner who reverses earlier trading gains and moves them into OCI has erased valid history. Correct the workpaper by preserving the old category, the transfer event and approval, the transfer date, the transfer-date carrying layers, and the new category. Apply the current transfer rule in the direction of the move. The schedule may process an approved transfer, but it cannot invent the evidence that supports one.
