Subtopic 610-30 addresses a nonmonetary asset converted into monetary assets by events such as destruction, theft, or condemnation. It distinguishes that monetary transaction from a nonmonetary exchange. Reinvestment in a replacement asset does not merge the conversion with the later acquisition.

The bounded lesson uses this Subtopic for the conversion gain-or-loss rule and the replacement boundary. It uses Topic 360 for the old asset's supported carrying amount. Paragraph 610-30-25-4 points an amount that cannot yet be determined to the recognition guidance in Topic 450.

The FASB communicates Codification changes through Accounting Standards Updates. The current Codification view, rather than an Update by itself, is the authoritative United States GAAP source.
