Use Topic 210 to begin researching balance-sheet presentation under United States generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP). Subtopic 210-10 includes guidance on classifying assets and liabilities as current or noncurrent.

An amount's account name is not enough to decide its classification. Check when the asset will be used or collected, or when the liability must be settled. Read the applicable requirements and exceptions. Debt terms, for example, can require additional research in Topic 470. This guide identifies where to start; it does not resolve those questions from a balance alone.
