Expense disaggregation disclosure

Working definition

A note presentation that decomposes specified costs and expenses included in relevant income-statement captions, with the required categories, remaining amounts, selling-expense information, and period and scope labels established by applicable guidance.

Also calledDISE disclosure · Disaggregation of income statement expenses

ASU 2024-03 adds expense disaggregation for public business entities. It requires specified information about costs and expenses in relevant income-statement captions, remaining amounts, and selling expenses. The note does not replace the face of the income statement; it makes selected composition visible.

At August 7, 2026, the ordinary mandatory annual adoption date has not begun. The amendments apply for annual periods beginning after December 15, 2026 and for interim periods within annual periods beginning after December 15, 2027; early adoption is permitted. ASU 2025-01 clarified the non-calendar-year effective-date wording.

Treat adoption status as data

Record the entity type, fiscal-year start, reporting period, and annual or interim status. Add the early-adoption decision, transition method, current or pending view, comparative treatment, and ledger-to-caption mapping. “The FASB issued it” is not an effective-date conclusion.

ASC 220-40-50-6 sets out the table and category requirements for relevant expense captions. Build the map from the amount already included in each caption, then reconcile the required categories and remaining amount back to that caption. Keep annual and interim captions separate when their level of detail differs.
