Postretirement benefit attribution requires a named plan, population, date, and evidence owner. Attribution assigns expected postretirement benefits to employee service periods under substantive plan eligibility and benefit terms. The supported method converts the EPBO pool into amounts earned through each date.

Apply it

If full eligibility occurs after ten years of service, the actuarial attribution schedule may assign benefits across that service period. APBO accumulates the portion attributed through year-end.

Common mistake

Do not assume that all EPBO belongs in APBO on the employee's hire date. Attribute expected benefits over the service period required by the plan terms and Topic 715. That error would front-load the APBO without following the plan's required service period.

Keep the boundary clear

Accounting reconciles the supplied schedule but does not invent an attribution period or ignore caps, participant payments, subsidies, or amendment rights.

Authority

Read ASC 715-60-35-4 for ratable attribution of expected future benefits.
