Research starts from the issue statement and facts, not from a preferred entry. Use the Codification structure and versioned source records to locate scope, recognition, measurement, presentation, disclosure, transition, and effective-date guidance. Preserve the search path and paragraphs reviewed.

Draft each mini-memo with question, short answer, facts, authority, analysis, alternatives, conclusion state, accounting effects, disclosures, controls, and open items. Quote sparingly; explain how the authority applies to the supplied facts. A paragraph citation cannot compensate for a missing contract term.

Label conclusions. “Verified” means the necessary packet evidence and applicable authority support the conclusion. “Estimate-dependent” identifies the estimate and owner. “Alternative” explains another viable route and why it was not selected. “Unresolved” names the missing fact and release consequence.

Keep unresolved items in a reserve outside the base-case postings. Quantify a range only when the packet supports one. Do not silently choose zero, the midpoint, or the answer that preserves a covenant.

A second reviewer should be able to disagree with a judgment without reconstructing the facts from scratch. That is the standard for the research checkpoint.
