Foreign-currency cash flow

Working definition

A cash receipt or payment denominated in a foreign currency that is classified from its underlying activity and translated into the reporting currency using the supported transaction-period convention.

Also calledTranslated cash-flow transaction

A foreign-currency cash receipt or payment keeps the nature of its underlying activity. Translation changes the reporting-currency amount; it does not turn an operating receipt into a financing receipt or create a new transaction.

Preserve native-currency evidence

Each row needs the entity, currencies, cash account, date, native amount, activity class, rate source, applied rate, and translated amount. Reconcile the bank account in its native currency before translation.

ASC 830-230-45-1 requires foreign-currency cash flows to use exchange rates in effect when the cash flows occur. It permits an appropriately weighted average when the result is substantially the same as using the transaction-date rates. A closing rate is not the default for all period activity.

Keep activity and exchange effects on separate rails

Classify the translated receipt or payment as operating, investing, or financing from its underlying facts. Translate ending cash on the supplied closing basis, then derive the separate exchange-rate effect needed to reconcile the population.

This concept does not teach full foreign-currency accounting. Functional- currency selection, remeasurement, translation, hyperinflation, and rate selection remain supplied conclusions. The cash-flow schedule tests their arithmetic effect without granting those judgments.
