  4. Authority

Pension plan assets belongs in a plan-specific employer file. Pension plan assets are segregated resources restricted to participant benefits. Reconcile trustee-supported fair value from opening assets, actual return, contributions, benefits, settlements, fees, and other controlled changes.

Apply it

Opening assets of $15 million plus $1.05 million actual return and $1.2 million contribution, less $1.1 million benefits, produce $16.15 million ending assets.

Common mistake

Do not assume that pension trust assets are ordinary employer investments. Qualifying plan assets belong in the funded-status calculation and are not unrestricted sponsor assets. That error would overstate employer investments and ignore the restrictions attached to trust resources in both liquidity analysis and funded status.

Keep the boundary clear

Plan assets are not sponsor investments or unrestricted liquidity. Existence, title, restrictions, and fair value require trustee, custodian, valuation, and legal evidence.

Authority

Read ASC 715-30-25-1 for use of plan-asset fair value in funded status.
