Concept · C:stated-annual-rate

Stated annual rate

Working definition

An annualized rate quote that, under the declared convention used here, is divided by the number of compounding intervals per year to obtain the rate applied each period.

Also calledNominal annual rate · Annual percentage rate before intra-year compounding

A 6% stated annual rate compounded monthly supplies a 0.5% monthly periodic rate under the module's convention:

0.06 ÷ 12 = 0.005

The quote is annualized language; 0.005 is the rate applied each month. The effective annual rate answers a third question: how much one dollar grows over twelve monthly compounding intervals.

Record the quote and its conversion rule together. Dividing by twelve is valid here because the supplied convention states twelve equal monthly compounding intervals. It is not a general instruction for every annual percentage. A rate with a different legal definition, day-count basis, or payment frequency needs its own documented conversion.

“Nominal,” “stated,” and “APR” are not universal synonyms across every product, jurisdiction, or disclosure regime. Real credit and investment documents may use fees, day-count rules, timing assumptions, or statutory definitions outside this foundation. Read the governing contract and disclosure before converting.

This concept compares rate conventions. It does not compare product cost, investment merit, or compliance with consumer-credit rules.

Learning objectives

Put the concept to work

Learning level

Understand this concept

  • Distinguish a stated annual quote from the periodic rate applied in a formula and from the effective annual growth produced by compounding.
Learning level

Apply this concept

  • Convert a declared stated annual rate to a matching periodic rate and identify contracts or disclosures for which simple division is not the governing convention.
