Concept · C:timeliness

Timeliness

Working definition

The quality of making information available to decision makers in time for it to be capable of influencing their decisions.

Also calledTimely financial information

Information can be accurate and still arrive too late to help with a decision. A lender considering a loan renewal may need the company's statements before agreeing to new terms. Receiving them afterward can inform later decisions, but cannot serve the same purpose in the completed renewal.

Timeliness does not mean releasing the first available number without checking it. A warranty estimate that omits relevant products is not improved simply by being published sooner. The company must use an appropriate process and meet the applicable reporting requirements.

Reporting dates and later evidence are separate questions

The date described by a balance sheet is not necessarily the last date on which evidence can be considered in preparing it. Later information may clarify conditions that existed at period end or identify new conditions. The applicable subsequent-event guidance determines the treatment.

The timeliness question is whether the information is available while it can still influence decisions. It does not replace filing deadlines, rules for estimates, or requirements for evaluating later evidence.

Required level here: understand. Required. A delay analysis needs an explicit connection between availability and the decision the information can still influence.
