The course stipulates that Cedar Trail controls an 80-percent-owned voting- interest subsidiary. That bounded fact allows worksheet practice. It does not create a universal rule that more than 50 percent always settles Topic 810.

Start with separate parent and subsidiary columns. Add elimination columns and a consolidated column. Eliminate the parent's investment against the subsidiary equity and acquisition-date basis schedule. Eliminate supplied intercompany receivables and payables, sales and purchases, interest, dividends, and any unrealized profit required by the exercise.

Do not post worksheet eliminations to either legal entity's ledger. The parent still owns an investment; the subsidiary still has its equity; the entities still owe or sold to one another under their legal records. The consolidated view removes internal claims and flows for external reporting.

Present noncontrolling interest within consolidated equity and attribute the supplied share of earnings. A 20-percent NCI does not mean every line is simply multiplied by 80 percent. Consolidation generally brings in 100 percent of the subsidiary's assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses before attribution and elimination.

Before using this worksheet on a new entity, reopen model triage. VIEs, agency relationships, common control, investment companies, tiered entities, ownership changes, and deconsolidation require advanced analysis.
