Corporate-owned life-insurance cash flow

Working definition

The classification of settlement proceeds from corporate- or bank-owned life-insurance policies as investing inflows and the entity's supported classification policy for related premium payments.

Also calledCOLI cash-flow classification · BOLI cash-flow classification

Corporate-owned and bank-owned life-insurance settlements use a specific rule. ASC 230-10-45-21C classifies settlement proceeds as investing inflows. This rule is separate from the covered-loss analysis used for other insurance claims.

Keep proceeds and premiums distinct

The same paragraph permits premium payments to be classified as investing, operating, or a combination of the two. The entity therefore needs a supported and consistently applied policy for premiums. A matching-section assumption can be wrong even when the same insurance contract produces both directions of cash.

For example, an entity may have an investing classification for settlement proceeds and a documented operating classification for premiums. The difference does not create an error by itself. Test each direction against the paragraph and the entity's policy.

Reconcile the policy ledger

Retain the policy identifier, insured person, premium date and amount, settlement date and amount, bank trace, classification policy, and reviewer. Separate actual cash from changes in cash-surrender value and other noncash measurement effects.

The cash-flow analysis does not decide recognition or measurement of the insurance asset. It also does not infer a premium-policy election from prior statement captions. When the policy is unclear or applied inconsistently, record the issue before release.
