Gross and net cash-flow presentation

Working definition

The presentation decision that reports gross receipts and payments unless specific guidance permits a net amount for the stated facts and reporting period.

Also calledGross-versus-net cash reporting

Gross presentation keeps economically different receipts and payments visible. ASC 230-10-45-7 states that gross amounts are generally more relevant, while identifying limited classes for which net reporting can provide enough information.

Start with gross transaction evidence

Borrowing $1 million and repaying $900,000 is not ordinarily the same evidence as a $100,000 financing inflow. The net change may tie the debt balance while concealing liquidity, maturity, and refinancing information. Retain the two bank events and their contract references before testing presentation.

ASC 230-10-45-26 requires investing inflows and outflows and financing inflows and outflows to be reported separately, apart from stated exceptions. ASC 230-10-45-8 through 45-9 describe scoped net reporting for specified items with particular turnover, amount, maturity, or customer-cash characteristics. A net account change does not establish those facts.

Document any net line

Define the eligible transaction population, cite the applicable exception, and show that every included receipt and payment meets it. Reconcile the gross rows to the presented net amount. Preserve excluded transactions separately.

The gross ledger also supports disclosure, analytics, and later correction. Net presentation is a conclusion about a qualified population. It is not a shortcut for missing transaction data or a policy election based on the line management prefers.

Learning objectives

Put the concept to work

Learning level

Understand this concept

  • Explain why a net account change can conceal distinct receipts, payments, acquisitions, disposals, or financing activity and does not by itself justify net presentation.
Learning level

Apply this concept

  • Test a supplied net-presentation conclusion against transaction facts and the applicable guidance, then retain gross evidence even when a net line is permitted.
