Inventory disclosure

Working definition

The financial-statement information that explains inventory accounting policies, carrying amounts, classifications, cost-flow methods, material measurement effects, and other required facts for the entity and period.

Also calledInventory note

An inventory note connects policy language and reported amounts to the close file. Begin with a population table. For each material population, record its class, carrying amount, cost-flow method, subsequent-measurement path, ledger, workpaper, reporting date, and unresolved evidence. One sentence cannot describe FIFO, LIFO, and retail-method populations as if they use the same accounting.

Reconcile the class amounts to the statement total. Tie each method to the approved policy and cost schedule. Compute a LIFO reserve only from comparable LIFO and non-LIFO amounts with the same date, population, and scope. Tie each write-down, purchase-commitment loss, and estimate to its workpaper. Arithmetic agreement cannot rescue incorrect policy wording or an incomplete population.

ASC 330-10-50-1 addresses the basis used to state inventories. Paragraph 50-2 addresses substantial and unusual subsequent-measurement losses. Paragraph 50-5 addresses specified purchase-commitment losses, subject to the effective guidance for the reporting date. Paragraph 50-6 points to significant-estimate disclosure guidance. Applicability and other requirements still need current research for the entity and period.

Keep US GAAP and IAS 2 in separate columns. A reporting-basis comparison needs method, measurement, reversal, tax, transition, and opening-policy analysis; it is not a word substitution. Start with the Cedar note reconciliation, then review the independent Northstar draft.

Learning objectives

Put the concept to work

Learning level

Understand this concept

  • Explain how inventory policy, classes, carrying amounts, cost-flow methods, LIFO bridges, write-downs, estimates, pledges, and uncertainty disclosures answer different reader questions.
Learning level

Analyze this concept

  • Reconcile a draft inventory note to controlled quantities, ledgers, cost-flow schedules, measurement adjustments, estimation workpapers, and current requirement locators, identifying unsupported language.
