A non-GAAP measure can answer a useful question that GAAP statements do not isolate. It can also remove costs that remain economically central to the business. The label “adjusted” resolves neither possibility.
Begin with the most comparable GAAP measure and reproduce the reconciliation. For every adjustment, ask what transaction created it, whether cash moved, whether the item can recur, whether gains and losses are treated symmetrically, and whether the definition is consistent across periods and peers.
Measure design is an argument
Suppose a company excludes growth investment from EBITDA. That may help answer what current operations look like before expansion spending. It may obscure the economics if continued expansion is inseparable from the business model. The correct response is not to ban the measure or accept it; state the decision it serves and test whether the adjustment supports that decision.
The We Company filing is a useful case because it presents multiple adjusted measures alongside GAAP losses and extensive business-model disclosures. The SEC's receipt of the filing is not an endorsement, and the later withdrawal is not proof that any one metric caused the outcome.
Put the concept to work
Understand this concept
- Explain why a non-GAAP measure needs a precise label, definition, reconciliation, period, and purpose before a reader can interpret it.
Analyze this concept
- Evaluate each adjustment in a non-GAAP reconciliation for recurrence, business economics, symmetry, consistency, and comparability.
