Public filing navigation

Working definition

A method for locating, identifying, interpreting, and cross-checking financial statements, notes, schedules, management discussion, controls information, exhibits, and machine-readable facts within an official filing for a stated registrant and period.

Also calledFinancial filing navigation · EDGAR filing navigation

A filing is a container with several reporting layers. The audited financial statements and notes are not the same as management discussion, selected data, risk factors, controls disclosures, exhibits, earnings releases, or XBRL facts. Those layers can corroborate or contextualize one another without sharing the same authority, assurance, measurement, or date.

Search is useful for locating a candidate phrase. It can also land on a prior- year comparison, exhibit, duplicated inline-XBRL text, amended filing, or management-defined metric. The researcher should return to the statement or note heading, confirm units and periods, read surrounding context, and confirm the official filing identity.

Read the figure in context

Identify the reporting entity, period, currency, scale, statement or note, and the role of the surrounding disclosure. These details determine what the figure means. More extensive records may be required for research, data extraction, or a reviewable professional work product; those requirements belong to the task that needs them rather than to ordinary filing navigation.

Preserve the filing evidence chain

Record enough information for another person to find the same passage:

  1. Form and accession number that identify the filing.
  2. Filer and reporting entity represented by the statements.
  3. Exact date or period and the comparative column used.
  4. Statement, note, schedule, exhibit, or management section.
  5. Heading, account label, currency, and scale.
  6. Limits of what the public filing can establish.

For example, Apple's 2025 consolidated balance sheets report inventory for the consolidated group, at September 27, 2025, in millions of US dollars. Removing the row label, date, group boundary, or scale changes the meaning of the digits. The filing can establish the reported amount and disclosed policy. It normally cannot establish whether every underlying inventory item was counted and valued correctly because the detailed records are not public.

A PDF, classroom extract, machine-readable fact, or search result can help locate the information. Reconcile it to the filed document before relying on it. Copies can omit headings, flatten tables, or repeat a comparative fact from a different filing.
