Segment disclosure

Working definition

Topic 280 note information that explains how a public entity identifies and measures its reportable segments, the CODM function, significant expenses and other segment items, segment results and assets, reconciliations, and required entity-wide information.

Also calledReportable segment note

Segment reporting exposes part of the internal management view without turning every internal report into a financial-statement note. The note explains the basis of organization, measures used, and how those measures connect to the consolidated statements.

ASU 2023-07 expands the significant-expense and related disclosure model. It requires specified information annually and at interim dates. It also applies the Topic 280 disclosure package to public entities with one reportable segment. A single segment therefore does not mean “no segment note.”

Control management data like reporting data

Preserve the exact CODM package, date, measure definitions, allocation rules, significant-expense population, other segment item calculation, changes, intersegment amounts, eliminations, consolidated ties, and review approvals. Calling an amount “CODM data” does not exempt it from a reproducible disclosure process.

ASC 280-10-50-20 applies the disclosure package even when a public entity has one reportable segment. For each reportable segment, ASC 280-10-50-26A addresses significant expense categories, while ASC 280-10-50-30 requires specified reconciliations to consolidated amounts. Keep management measures and GAAP totals distinct until that bridge is complete.

Learning objectives

Put the concept to work

Learning level

Understand this concept

  • Explain why segment measures can follow information used by the CODM while required reconciliations and descriptions preserve the bridge to consolidated GAAP amounts.
Learning level

Analyze this concept

  • Build an annual and interim segment evidence map covering CODM identity and use, measures, significant expenses, other items, assets, changes, single-segment implications, reconciliations, entity-wide disclosures, and source controls.

Required level here: understand. Required. The evidence map must preserve management measures and consolidated amounts as connected but distinct.
