Continuing operations is a reporting component, not a forecast. A restructuring charge, impairment, litigation loss, or volatile gain can remain in continuing operations even when an analyst doubts it will recur. Conversely, a disposed component is not automatically discontinued merely because it will not recur.
That distinction protects two jobs. The financial statements follow the applicable presentation model. An analyst may separately assess persistence, but should not relabel every unwanted item as “nonrecurring” or remove losses while retaining related gains.
Keep the bridge visible
A controlled income bridge begins with continuing operations. It adds or subtracts a qualifying discontinued-operation component to reach net income, then adds OCI to reach comprehensive income. Label tax effects, periods, units, ownership attribution, and reclassification effects. The bridge prevents a common error: comparing one entity's net income with another entity's continuing-operations subtotal.
ASC 205-20-45-3A places qualifying discontinued results outside income from continuing operations and presents them net of tax. ASC 220-10-45-7 preserves continuing and discontinued operations as components within net income. Neither paragraph says the continuing component is recurring, core, or a forecast of next period's cash flow.
