Held for sale is a dated classification. It does not mean that management would like to sell an asset. ASC 360-10-45-9 requires all six criteria in the long-lived-asset model. The evidence must support an authorized plan, immediate availability, active buyer search, a probable sale within the required period, a reasonable asking price, and an unlikely plan change.
For a component being evaluated for discontinued-operation presentation, ASC 205-20-45-1E supplies the parallel held-for-sale criteria. Meeting those criteria answers the disposal-status condition. It does not by itself establish a strategic shift with a major effect.
Classification changes the measurement route for long-lived assets within ASC 360's scope. Measure other assets and liabilities in a disposal group under their applicable guidance first. Then ASC 360-10-35-43 requires the scoped long-lived assets to be measured at the lower of carrying amount or fair value less cost to sell. Depreciation stops while that classification applies. The sale itself still needs separate control-transfer evidence before derecognition. If the criteria later fail, ASC 360-10-45-10 routes the asset back to the held-and-used measurement rule.
Keep presentation separate from classification. A qualifying held-for-sale asset that is not a discontinued operation is presented separately under ASC 360-10-45-14. Discontinued-operation reporting requires the separate component and strategic-shift analysis in ASC 205-20-45-1B.
Use the asset-exit lesson to build the dated criteria matrix. Then try the classification task. If the packet lacks a criterion or fair-value evidence, name the missing fact. Do not invent a classification date or measured amount.
Put the concept to work
Understand this concept
- Distinguish management intent, held-for-sale classification, held-and-used impairment, sale derecognition, and discontinued-operation presentation.
Analyze this concept
- Analyze a dated disposal packet for classification evidence and route depreciation, measurement, presentation, and disclosure questions without inventing sale probability or value.

To understand this concept: Helpful. Classification precedes but does not itself complete derecognition.
- Held-for-sale long-lived asset — Understand
To analyze this concept: Required. The route depends on criteria and dates rather than a generic plan label.
