In an oligopoly, a firm's best action can depend on what it expects a small number of significant rivals to do. Price, output, capacity, product design, standards, compatibility, advertising, research, and entry response can all be strategic variables.
There is no universal number of firms that settles the label. Market shares, fringe suppliers, imports, capacity, entry, buyer power, differentiation, and the time horizon affect whether firms are meaningfully interdependent.
Few firms do not prove collusion. Firms can react independently to the same cost, demand, or public information and can anticipate one another without an agreement. Parallel conduct is evidence to investigate, not a complete legal or causal conclusion. Conversely, vigorous rivalry can occur among few firms.
An analyst should map the mechanism and evidence: what each firm knew, when it acted, which alternatives existed, how rivals responded, what communications or contracts exist, and what current law asks. Accounting results can show timing and effects but cannot alone establish agreement or intent.
Market structure is a screen, not a verdict
Detailed visual description
The ladder begins with a defined market boundary, chooses a provisional structure benchmark, specifies substitution, entry, interdependence, or power mechanisms, triangulates empirical evidence, reconciles accounting records to economic variables, and only then applies current legal authority and decision criteria. Every row lists claims that cannot yet be inferred.
Put the concept to work
Analyze this concept
- Analyze strategic interdependence in a few-firm setting while distinguishing concentration, conscious response, parallel conduct, agreement, market power, efficiency, and legal conclusions.

Build on these ideas
- Incentive — Analyze
To analyze this concept: Helpful. Rivals' likely responses can change the payoff to a firm's current choice without proving an agreement.
- Market structure — Analyze
To analyze this concept: Required. Oligopoly is distinguished by strategic interdependence within a defined market, not by a universal firm-count cutoff.
