Quantity supplied attaches an offer quantity to a price, unit, period, and supply relationship. A complete statement might say, “At $50 per chair, sellers would offer 700 chairs per week under the supplied baseline schedule.”
If price rises while input costs, technology, seller population, expectations, capacity, and rules remain fixed, quantity supplied changes along the same relationship. That is not a supply shift.
Keep offer, output, inventory, and sale distinct
A producer can manufacture 1,000 units, hold 300 in inventory, offer 600 during the week, and sell 550. Those are different quantities. Quantity supplied is a modeled offer at a stated price; actual sales depend on demand and exchange. Financial statements classify production costs, inventory, revenue, receivables, and cash under separate events and recognition criteria.
The distinction prevents an inventory increase from being reported as a supply shift without evidence about the price–offer relationship and its determinants.
Hold the supply relationship fixed
Suppose Qs = 200 + 10P. At a price of $40, quantity supplied is 600 units; at $50, it is 700. That comparison is a movement along the same supplied relationship. A change in input costs, technology, seller count, expectations, or institutions can shift the relationship and must be tested at a common price. The modeled quantity is an offer under stated assumptions. It is not necessarily production, inventory, sales, revenue, or cash, each of which needs separate operational and accounting evidence.
Put the concept to work
Apply this concept
- Compute or read quantity supplied at a specified price and label it as a point conditional on one supply relationship rather than evidence that supply itself changed.
