Scope
Topic 230 is the authoritative US-GAAP starting point for determining whether a statement of cash flows is required and how cash-flow amounts are classified, presented, reconciled, and disclosed. A specific conclusion remains bound to the applicable Subtopic and paragraph, the transaction facts, entity type, reporting period, and effective amendments.
Instructional relevance
The foundational module uses Topic 230 for three linked ideas: operating, investing, and financing classification; the beginning-to-ending cash reconciliation; and the indirect reconciliation from net income to operating cash flow. Undergraduate accounting learners practice preparation and control tracing. Finance learners use the same structure to ask bounded cash-conversion questions without turning a reconciliation sign into an economic-quality verdict.
Transition and historical use
This record identifies the living Codification content reviewed on 2026-08-06; it is not an assertion that every paragraph in Topic 230 shares one effective date. Historical or future cases must attach the paragraph-level amendments and effective dates applicable to their facts rather than silently reusing this current-view record.
Limitations
The record does not reproduce Codification text and does not resolve specialized questions involving cash equivalents, restricted cash, digital assets, derivatives, taxes, foreign currency, acquisitions, disposals, supplier finance, or industry guidance. FASB had active cash-flow research and standard-setting projects when this version was verified; tentative decisions do not change current accounting, but issued amendments trigger a new version review.
